IN MEMORY OF GRANDFATHER
LATER this year will mark a special anniversary for radio birdman Richard Fowler (above) and his New Zealand family. In October 1918 Lt William Fowler, Richard’s grandfather, while fighting in World War 1 with the 1st Battalion Wellington Regiment was awarded the Military Cross. The citation reads ‘for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Briastre, France. He was shot through the arm by machine gun fire but continued on with his platoon to the objective.’ “He was my father’s father and a very quiet and humble man who rarely spoke about the war. I only just realised it would be the 100th anniversary of his actions,” said Richard. Lest we forget.
