MAKING SURFING CHILD’S PLAY

- KATE PARASKEVOS

Meet the five-year-old Burleigh Heads surfing star who has been signed with surf and street clothing brand Piping Hot.

PINT-SIZED surfer Kalanni Hurrey is at home in the ocean.

The five-year-old Burleigh Heads local has been surfing since she was eight months old and has now been signed with Australian surf and street clothing brand Piping Hot as the youngest sponsored surfer ever.

And parents Joel and Carly Hurrey could not be more proud of their “energiser battery” daughter.

“From day one, I knew she was going to be amazing,” said dad Joel. “Her love of the ocean grew from day dot.

“She first started surfing at eight months old on my longboard and went from there.

“Every spare minute is spent watching mum and dad surf and playing at the beach.”

But not only is the prep student a surfing star in the making, she is also a skilled skateboarder.

“Once I saw her skate the big hill out the front of her house, I knew she had the surfing skater bug,” he said.

“She has never been an indoor child, so everything outdoors entices her.

“What dad does, she wants to do to.”

Kalanni, her parents and brother Reef are all into surfing, with the family rarely spending a day away from the beach.

Which all goes towards Kalanni being the perfect little ambassador for the Piping Hot brand.

“They (Piping Hot) have her set for a massive summer campaign and plenty of surfing,” he said.

But she will have to juggle her surfing commitments with her all-important first year of school.

“It is all about playing with friends and enjoying everything new,” he said.

“She is a beautiful soul with a crazy amount of drive.

“As long as she enjoys it, the sky is the limit.

“Life’s all about having fun and surfing is just that.”

SHE HAS NEVER BEEN AN INDOOR CHILD, SO EVERYTHING OUTDOORS ENTICES HER FATHER JOEL HURREY
