Busy Issy eyes more titles

- ALEXANDRA BERNARD

JUNIOR Issy Taylor doesn’t waste any time when it comes to her golf game.

After taking out the Queensland Girls Amateur Championship, the 17-year-old is already back on the golf course teeing up for the NSW titles.

The Sanctuary Cove golfer claimed the Queensland title by 10 shots at Bargara near Bundaberg last week and is on top of the world heading into competition in Newcastle this week.

“It felt really good, it was the biggest win I’ve ever had,” said Issy, who was runner-up in the same event after losing a playoff.

She made her first putt at the age of 12 after her dad Neil suggested she switch from tennis to golf.

Issy’s barely put her clubs down since and can be found on the golf course six days a week, mainly practising by herself.

The Year 12 student at St Stephen’s College, Coomera, has had to pull back on the number of tournaments she plays as she balances her schoolwork and golf.

“It’s not easy but it’s definitely worth it,” said Issy, who dreams of becoming a professional golfer. last year

“I want to go to college (in the US) next year and then after that I want to be on the LPGA tour,” she said.

Mother Julie was elated to see Issy win the Queensland championship, which came after the teenager shot a women’s course-record 66 in the opening round on the way to a 16-under 276.

“It’s the most amazing experience to watch your child work so hard and play the best they can,” she said.

“I’m thrilled to achieve.”
