QUINCY AND LEO GO BIG AT OCCY’S COMP

-

RISING stars Quincy Symonds and Leo Casal have won their respective age divisions at the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp at Duranbah.

Symonds, the Tweed Heads youngster who is nicknamed The Flying Squirrel, won the 12-andunder girls final yesterday.

She couldn’t be happier after seeing former world champ Mark Occhilupo and former junior world champ Jack Freestone surfing at the beach and then winning a close final against Zahlia Short (Austinmer, NSW).

“I’m so stoked, the waves were pumping,” she said. “Seeing Jack and Occy surfing out there just inspired me to go big. The heat was awesome.”

Casal won an exciting 14and-under boys final from Touma Cameron (Suffolk Park, NSW).

The Brazilian has been living in Coolangatta for the past few months and is already on his way home.

“It’s amazing to win here in Australia. I had to change my plane ticket to make the final today – I was supposed to leave this morning. So I’m stoked,” he said.

Other champions were Lennox Chell (NSW) and Holly Williams (Qld) in the 16s, Ellie Harrison (Vic) in the 14-and-under girls and Hugh Vaughan (NSW) in the 12-and-under boys.
