Seahawks on the rise

NORTH Gold Coast have moved off the bottom of the ladder and are in a position to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon after a win against Southern Districts.

The Seahawks beat the Spartans 104-99 in a tight Queensland Basketball League battle of the cellar dwellers.

After going winless for most of their debut season, the Seahawks now have three wins in the past month and coach Adam Tyrus believes they need to notch at least one more to avoid the dreaded “spoon”.

“(That win) does get us off the bottom but the job’s not done, we’ve actually played a few more games than (the Spartans), so we’ve probably got to win one or two more to make sure we stay off the bottom,” he said.

“But the way that we’re playing, we’re very optimistic about that.”

The Seahawks also pushed

South West Metro Pirates to extra time on Friday before going down 101-95. Imports Jerron Jamerson (30 points) and Quinton Campbell (18) were outstanding, as was Gold Coast product Sasha Lomakin.

“He’s been awesome for us and I’ve really been impressed by his production,” Tyrus said. “This is his first season of QBL and someone who’s been improving

every week and I’ve got full confidence in.”

The news was not as good for the Seahwaks women though, who lost both games at the weekend and are battling to hold a spot in the top eight.

Gold Coast Rollers lost their clash against Ipswich Force, coach Mick Conlon’s former team, by one point. The Rollers women also lost.
