United not letting loss hurt their late charge

- ALEXANDRA BERNARD

GOLD Coast United Women’s side are holding their heads high despite a 6-1 weekend loss to The Gap.

Going up against the team on top of the ladder was never going to be an easy task for United, but coach Michael Cook said he expected a closer result.

“We were super confident heading into the game. We’ve had a nice run, with three wins in a row and the women trained as good as they have for the whole season,” he said.

After a strong start, United took an early lead and headed into the second half down only by one.

“In the first eight minutes of the second half we had three very good chances to make it 2-2,” Cook said.

After failing to score, The Gap took the ball and ran with it, scoring quickly and leaving United too far behind.

“When you play a top team like The Gap, if you don’t take chances you’re in trouble,” Cook said.

He said the team played well for an hour of the game, but too many lapses in concentration let them down.

United will be up against Western Pride in Round 22 and Cook’s confident.

“We’re in good shape and if we have good preparation we’ll be competitive,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast United Men went down 3-1 to Magpies Crusaders United.

The loss means they stay at ninth on the ladder with 26 points.
