READY to pull on the green and gold for Australia, 18-year-old Cormac KennedyLeverett will be rowing for glory at the Youth Olympics.

Set to compete in the single scull at Buenos Aires in October, Cormac will be facing a new format to which he’s previously rowed.

“This event is a little different to what I’m used to racing, considering it’s only 500m racing and I usually race 2km,” the Gold Coaster said.

“This will bring some new changes to it that I look forward to taking it on.”

Despite the challenge, Cormac is raring to go.

“I’m definitely excited,” he said. Cormac learnt to row in his Year 7 program and has the ultimate goal of winning Olympic gold for Australia in the men’s Single Scull.

He’s putting in the hard yards training six days a week, an average of 22-26 hours per week.

Marcus Free, who has been coaching Cormac for four years, is confident he’s in with a good chance.

“Cormac has a natural speed element, which means he has a good start,” he said.

Free said this and the shorter race format puts him in good stead.

“He usually races two thousand metres and all the races he has won he sets up the win in the first 500m,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cormac will head to the Junior Championship in Czech Republic from August 7-12.
