Nugget set for epic finish

-

TODAY’S Golden Nugget semi-finals have been locked in, with Kiwi Jo Edwards to face Siti Zalina Ahmad and Lynsey Clarke against Kelsey Cottrell in the women’s draw.

The quartet cruised through to the last day’s action following yesterday’s final round of the sectional play at Tweed Heads Bowls Club.

The women’s conclusion promises to be just as exciting as the men’s division.

Aussie bowls icon Kelvin Kerkow will line up against former Commonwealth Games medallist Jeremy Henry in one semi-final.

The other will feature Aaron Teys and Alex Marshall, the Scottish star who claimed gold at the Gold Coast Games in April.

Marshall took out yesterday’s epic sectional contest with Henry to secure top spot in Group B.

The invitation-only Golden Nugget, regarded as one of Australia’s most prestigious bowls competitions, has $30,000 in prizemoney up for grabs and features 12 of the best men and 12 of the best women in bowls.

Finals of the Golden Nugget, in its 32nd year, will be shown live on Facebook, with matches scheduled for 9.30am and 1.30pm today.

JESSIE Cottell’s Jackaroos dream is closer than ever after adding the Junior Golden Nugget crown to her Australian Open triumph.

Six weeks after claiming the national under-18 girls’ singles title, the Helensvale star took out the Golden Nugget at Tweed Heads on Sunday in her final under-18 event before her 18th birthday next month.

The Emerging Jackaroos squad member is now hoping to transfer her junior success into the senior ranks.

“My ultimate goal in lawn bowls is to wear the green and gold uniform,” she said.

Cottell adds to the growing list of Gold Coast talent eligible to nominate for the Bulletin’s Local Sports Star awards.

The Bulletin is on the lookout for kids who love their sport, great teams and the awesome coaches and volunteers who make it all possible.
