Plumb siblings eye historic metro win

- MARK OBERHARDT

SIBLINGS Ryan and Angela Plumb can write themselves into Queensland racing history if Sugar Sizzle wins at the Gold Coast tomorrow.

Angela Plumb is building a name for herself as a trainer on the Gold Coast while Ryan Plumb was the leading jockey at the Aquis Park track last season.

Ryan has ridden several winners for Angela but not at a metropolitan Saturday meeting with Sugar Sizzle ($9.50) to run in the Oakwood Park 3YO Handicap (1400m).

The Gold Coast program tomorrow is metropolitan standard which means the Plumbs can be the first brother-sister to combine for a city win in Queensland.

There have been many examples of father-son, mother-son, father-daughter, mother-daughter and husband-wife combinations winning metropolitan races in Queensland.

But siblings competing together is rare.

The Plumbs come from one of the state’s best-known racing families. Their grandfather Lyle Plumb was a jockey and trainer, as was their father Lyle Jr .

Their uncle Myles was a champion apprentice who once rode five winners in a day at Randwick and later became an international trainer.

Sugar Sizzle, who is raced by an Aquis Farms syndicate, is a last-start Gatton winner.

“Our family has always been in racing and is very supportive,” Angela Plumb said.

“Sugar Sizzle has been racing well and this looks a nice race for her.”

■ TOOWOOMBA trainer Kevin Kemp has elected to start Sold For Song’s campaign at the Gold Coast rather than take the talented mare to Sydney.

He accepted in the Matt Dunn Racing Open Handicap (1200m) at the Coast and the Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick.

In the end Kemp decided to head to the Gold Coast but still has interstate races in mind for the mare who will be having her first start since a disastrous trip to Melbourne.

Sold For Song sustained superficial injuries when she ran last at Flemington in the Linlithgow Stakes won by Rich Charm on November 4.

That was her most recent run and the worst of her 24race career which has netted wins in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes and Gold Edition Plate as a three-year-old and seven stakes placings as an older mare.

Kemp has given Sold For Song plenty of time to get over her Flemington run.

“She has come back a stronger mare. She has had two jump-outs do she is ready to race,” he said.

Sold For Song is the $5.50 second favourite with Ladbrokes behind the Kris Leestrained Dal Cielo ($3.30).
