QBL YEAR IN REVIEW

SEASON REPORT CARD

- with Joel McInnes

WITH the QBL hopes of the Gold Coast coming to an end, here is the report card on the season that was.

MEN

Gold Coast Rollers ....... D+ Pre-season they loaded up on their most expensive roster. Hopes were high and after coming out of the gates 3-1, everyone thought it would be a great season. However, a massive swoon mid-season saw the Rollers go on a 1-7 stretch that was extremely frustrating for all. The boys turned it around and finished 5-1 to clinch a quarter-final which they lost to champs Townsville.

North GC Seahawks ...... C

In their first season the Seahawks struggled early as many could tell their roster was not strong enough. Starting 0-10 and on to a third coach of the season, they found themselves under Adam Tyrus and went on a 3-2 run that had fans in raptures. Finishing in equal last spot shows how tough this league is.

WOMEN

Gold Coast Rollers ........ CThe lady Rollers had a very tough season after going winless in the 2017 competition.

With a few strong players brought into the squad, the girls had a season of taking it to all the good teams and falling short, then not performing at their best when against the weaker teams. They finished strongly and showed what they were capable of. North GC Seahawks .... B+ To go 9-9 in your first season, clinching a playoff spot and push the league’s top team to the last quarter… give yourselves a round of applause, girls. A fantastic achievement this year. Word is coach Rob Sleaford is back again. Looking forward to seeing what talent they bring in to go closer.

BEST AND WORST

Lows

■ Tough 0-10 start for Seahawks men in debut season.

■ Rollers men falling off a cliff during the middle part of the season. ■ North Gold Coast Seahawks having two coach changes for the season

Highs

■ Seahawks clinching a playoff berth first up.

■ Lady Roller Alicia Carline winning the player of the week in the final round of the QBL season.

■ Definitely the highlight was the first ever battle of the Gold Coast. The Seahawks men defeated Gold Coast for a first win. Rookie coach Adam Tyrus, injured earlier in the year (predicted by yours truly) rallied the boys to an amazing fourthquarter effort. The pregame banter was fantastic and really added to the occasion.
