COOMERA SALON AIMS TO COLOUR CLIENTS COMFORTABLE

- AMBER MACPHERSON

WHEN Courtney Whitehead had an awkward experience at a tanning salon, she was determined to make sure no woman had to go through the same thing.

The incident inspired her to create Bronzed Curves, a tanning company aimed at making curvier women feel like the beauties they are.

“Years ago I went to get a tan and felt really uncomfortable,” Ms Whitehead said.

“I went in the room, stripped off ... it was a gorgeous young girl (doing the spray tan).

“I find when you are bigger, there are those concerns of being naked in front of others. I thought: ‘I’m not the only one who feels like this.’”

Ms Whitehead already worked as a beautician and decided to offer tanning on the side, first as a mobile service and now from her home in Coomera.

She said she wanted to cater to women who might feel self-conscious about stripping down to a disposable G-string in front of a stranger, which is practically everyone.

“My clients love how comfortable I make them feel and how it’s marketed towards body positivity,” she said. “It is very casual ... nobody’s looking, you’re still going to get a tan.”

Ms Whitehead said it was not only larger women who got in contact with her. She has clients of all shapes and sizes looking for a more comfortable experience.

“There’s one client, from Brisbane, she’s a size eight,” Ms Whitehead said.

“Everyone says having a spray tan makes you feel so much better, confident, healthier.”
