Hockey history repeat dream
LABRADOR will be hoping history repeats itself when they square off against University of Queensland in week one of the Brisbane Hockey League finals.
The Tigerstix have beaten the Red Roos on both prior occasions they have met in the playoffs.
Labrador came from two goals down to win 4-3 in the corresponding match three years ago, having breezed to a 5-1 victory over UQ during the 2013 finals series.
The Gold Coast side warmed up for the playoffs by thrashing Bulimba at the State Hockey Centre in Brisbane on Saturday.
Australian Kookaburras striker Dylan Wotherspoon scored a hat-trick, while Luca Brown, Joe Reardon and Blake Wotherspoon each hit two goals in the 9-0 romp.
The win wasn’t enough to elevate Labrador into third position on the ladder, however, as Pine Rivers St Andrews got the better of Kedron-Wavell 7-2
The net result of that is they are immediately put into a sudden-death situation, while topthree teams Easts, Commercial and Pine Rivers St Andrews each get a second chance.
While the Tigerstix have historically triumphed in finals matches against UQ, they failed to take victory against the St Lucia side in either of their regular-season showdowns this year.
UQ though were less than convincing in booking their
place in finals with a 2-1 win over eighth-placed Norths to leapfrog Kedron-Wavell, who narrowly missed out on their first playoffs berth since 1999.
Redcliffe Leagues took the wooden spoon for the first time since entering Brisbane’s Division 1 competition in 1960.
