Ton of wins gives Burleigh boss a ton of belief

-

BURLEIGH’S belief-building win over Townsville has taken mentor Jimmy Lenihan into an exclusive club headlined by Bears legend Rick Stone.

Lenihan on Saturday became the fourth coach to chalk up 100 Intrust Super Cup victories as his side went a step closer to a top-two finish by pouncing late to pip Townsville 22-12.

“It’s something I wasn’t really aware of,” Lenihan said of the milestone, which has been achieved in his second stint coaching at Pizzey Park.

“It’s nice but it is just a number I suppose.”

The Bears and Blackhawks were closely matched all afternoon before tries to Josh Berkers and Kai O’Donnell nudged the home side ahead.

“It was probably a bit of semi-final football early,” Lenihan said.

“It was a good game to give us some confidence and selfbelief that we do have an opportunity to play some good football against some good sides.”

The only way Burleigh can be dislodged from a top-two position is if they lose to Easts next weekend and Townsville defeat Wynnum Manly.

Out at Ipswich, Tweed Heads were condemned to one of those days against a red-hot Jets outfit on Saturday.

“They scored five tries off kicks in the first half and we dropped two tries over the line so we weren’t going that bad,” Seagulls coach Ben Woolf said.

“They would just get to the end of the set, put a big bomb up and get such a good kickchase team to it and get there first.”

Following the 52-16 loss, Woolf’s team will round out their season against the Northern Pride up at Barlow Park.
