Labor ‘ready’ if an election is called

- KIRSTIN PAYNE

A FEDERAL election could be just around the corner after another day of turmoil for the Turnbull Government, warns Gold Coast Senator Murray Watt.

“I think it is incredibly unpredictable at the moment, we don’t really know who the actual leader of the Liberal party is,” the Labor Senator said.

“Malcolm Turnbull is still the leader but in name only.

“Australia doesn’t have a clear Prime Minister, Government or Ministry – it is all extremely unpredictable.

“I think there is a very high chance of an election being called in the next few days.

“It has gotten to a point where it just can’t function, I don’t think the government is able to work together.

“An election is really the only way of resolving that.”

The political veteran said while the LNP was busy in party room lock-ups, the ALP would be ready to kick off any campaign on the Gold Coast.

“We are definitely ready for an election, we are only waiting to preselect a couple of candidates for some unwinnable Gold Coast seats,” he said. “Des Hardman, our candidate for Forde, was preselected months ago, has been campaigning for several years now on the same issues, and his campaign has been picking up in recent weeks regardless of what was going to happen. We were already door-knocking in Upper Coomera over the weekend, we aren’t waiting for an election to be called.”
