Rider lucky to survive

- SALLY COATES

A ROLLERCOASTER record holder who had a collision with a car while riding his motorcycle is pleading with the public to be more aware on the road.

Leonard Hebert is no stranger to thrills, riding Movie World’s DC Rivals HyperCoaster more than 1000 times in its first two months of operations, but being hit by a car is an experience he would not like to repeat.

The Sorrento man told the Bulletin he was riding on Ashmore Rd on Saturday when his bike and a car collided as the car turned in front of him.

With no time to stop, he and his bike hit the car at 50km/h.

“I was going down Ashmore Rd, riding through, having just come off the roundabout,” he said. “The light turned green, so I continued at my speed – and there was another driver out in the intersection.

“I had nowhere to go, no time to react.

“I was heading towards her so quickly my life flashed before my eyes and next thing you know I’m flying over her bonnet and I’m on the ground.”

Mr Hebert was taken to hospital by paramedics. A police investigation is under way.

One of his shoulders and collarbones were broken, and his sternum bruised in the crash.

It is the first time Mr Hebert has crashed in almost 20 years of riding.

Mr Hebert said that on the eve of Queensland Road Safety Week, which beginstoday, his accident had been a timely reminder to always be alert on the roads.

“I am lucky it wasn’t a hell of a lot worse,” he said.
