A DOLPHIN was dragged by a 4WD down the centre of Hastings Point yesterday morning, shocking an on-duty security guard.

The security guard, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Gold Coast Bulletin he couldn’t believe what he was seeing as the dolphin was dragged down the road, sliding into poles and gutters at 3am.

It is unknown whether the dolphin was dead or alive.

“I was walking down a side street and this truck went flying by and it seemed to be towing a dolphin,” he said.

“They had tied a rope to the dolphin’s tail and the other end to the tow bar at the back of the car.

“It was huge, 10-15ft, it would have weighed about 150kg-200kg, it was a big fish.

“I walked out onto the street and when they saw me they stepped on the gas and it was sliding around hitting posts and the gutter.”

The security guard said he was in such disbelief at what he was seeing, he didn’t get the licence plate of the truck. He said it looked like a black or dark blue Ford Maverick.

“It was an older model SUV heading from Hastings Point towards Pottsville,” he said.

It comes after witnesses reported seeing a dead dolphin carcass wash ashore at nearby Cabarita Beach on Sunday but it is unknown if the two incidents are related.

A Kingscliff Police Station spokeswoman said they were aware of the incident.
