WATER DURING THE DAY FOR BEST HERB OUTCOME

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND amanda.robbemond@news.com.au

WATERING your herbs in the morning rather than at night could be the secret to plant longevity.

That is the secret gardening expert Kate Heffernan says could keep your herbs happy and healthy.

“You shouldn’t water at night,” she said.

“Water during the day time. If you water at night that’s when your herbs start to perish, they can grow fungal diseases.”

Ms Heffernan said growing herbs didn’t need to take up a lot of time – and the more common herbs, such as oregano, basil, thyme, chives and parsley, were easy to grow.

“They’re so easy to grow in pots and gardens, they need good drainage and plenty of sun,” she said.

“They’re Mediterranean herbs so terracotta pots are perfect as they breathe. They do need water, they just need good drainage.”

Ms Heffernan said to start with the easy herbs. Sagen was one herb that was more difficult to grow.

When it came to veges, cucumbers were relatively easy to grow as well.

She suggested keeping cucumbers, which tend to climb horizontally, off the ground on a low climbing frame about 30cm off the ground.

“They’re terrific to grow,” she said.

“If they stay on the ground they blemish.”
