Teams chasing fives trophy

THE $60,000 National Club Five-a-Side Challenge competitio­n began at Club Helensvale yesterday.

A host of the world’s finest players from 19 clubs across Australia and one from New Zealand will continue battling it out today and tomorrow with the top four teams playing off on Thursday.

The high-quality field includes at least 42 past or present internatio­nal representa­tives from seven different countries. The remainder of the field are mostly interstate representa­tives.

Taren Point from NSW lead after day one with 19 points following their defeat of previous ladder leaders Warilla in the last round of the day.

Close behind are Cabramatta (NSW), Warilla (NSW) and Raymond Terrace (NSW) on 18 points. Defending champions Broadbeach sit in seventh place while home-town favourites Helensvale are 11th.

Helensvale and Warilla hold the most titles with four each in the 11-year history of the event.

CHRISTINA Pavlov (Broadbeach) and Ann Russell (Mus- grave Hill) have won the inaugural Ladies District Over 60 Pairs. Sue McKenzie and Cheryl Hutchinson from Broadbeach were runners-up.

COREY Marshall and Dominic Stogryn represente­d Ormeau Woods High in the Queensland Secondary Schools Cup finals. The pair finished sixth out of the 14 teams. Longreach won the title for the second year in a row.

MANY Gold Coasters will contest the Queensland Multi Disability Championsh­ips, which commence on Sunday at Chermside in Brisbane.

Categories include visionimpa­ired, hearing-impaired, and physical and intellectu­al disability.

Gold Coast Commonweal­th Games gold medallists Tony Bonnell (AWD) and Jake Fehlberg (vision-impaired) of Burleigh Heads will feature.
