PEDESTRIAN DEATH
A WOMAN was seen wandering on the road and screaming at traffic before being struck by a car and killed in Nerang last night.
Witnesses said the disturbing situation went on for some time before they heard the crash. It is understood an elderly man was driving.
He was last night being treated for shock.
The incident happened about 7.15pm in Ferry St and caused traffic disruptions.
A WITNESS has reported the bizarre moments before he heard a “bang” and found a woman hit by a car and killed in Nerang last night.
Ferry St restaurant owner Cengiz Deniz said he and his staff heard the woman yelling at traffic for almost 20 minutes before she was killed.
“We kept hearing her yelling and I didn’t know what she wanted,” he said.
“She tried to walk on the road and there were cars that stopped and beeped, said ‘get out of the road’ and all that.”
The owner of Melek Kebab & Pizza said he feared the worst a short time later when he heard a loud noise.
“And then about 15, 20 minutes later we heard the crash,” he said.
“We just heard a bang and we walked out and she was on the road, the car pulled up. That was it.”
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Ferry and Nerang streets about 7.15pm after reports of a car colliding with a pedestrian.
Police closed the road and redirected traffic.
Despite quick action by paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ambulance officers were treating the driver of the sedan – an older man with his partner – at the scene for shock.
The westbound lanes of Ferry St were blocked for some time while forensic crash investigators combed the scene.
Staff from the nearby Commercial Hotel joined scores of other onlookers watching the drama unfold. Pedestrians were stopped from walking too close to the scene and were redirected to other streets.
The accident happened close to The Maid of Sker monument in Bischof Pioneer Park. Police were unable to shed more light on the situation late last night but investigations were continuing.
Anyone who saw the woman on the road in the minutes leading up to her death is asked to contact police, especially those with dashcams.
