Take your moment: ‘08 skipper

- TOM BOSWELL

THE Southport Sharks’ last premiership-winning captain says the club’s current NEAFL team have the same mateship that drove his side to a flag a decade ago.

Darren O’Brien (pictured) played for the Sharks between 2003 and 2013 and was captain when Southport won the QAFL in 2005, 2006 and 2008, the club’s last premiership.

O’Brien,

41, attends numerous games throughout each season and said he believed the 2018 team was the one who would finally lift another trophy.

“This year it seems the mateship they have is like what we had back in 2008,” he said.

“They all seemed to be great mates and they play a really attractive style of football.”

O’Brien recalled the thrilling final-quarter comeback that helped Southport beat Morningside in 2008.

“It was pretty special,” O’Brien said.

“We were down by four goals in the last quarter and it wasn’t looking good.

“We had a lot of work to do but we were a great bunch of mates. There weren’t any individuals.

“We always went out together and stuck together. We still stick together now and catch up every few months. We just had that belief that we could turn it around.

“There was nothing specific we changed in the final quarter. I think it was just the experience of us being together for so long and being so close.

“Everyone hates Southport and there is nothing better than sticking it up them.”

O’Brien missed the 2006 grand final due to a broken arm and Southport lost the 2007 edition to Mt Gravatt.

“Grand finals don’t come around too often,” he said.
