BRISBANE’S Mt St Michael’s College will have one eye on the AeroSchools Australian Championships title when they return to the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre today.
The Ashgrove school (79 points) enters the second and final day of competition leading second-placed Melbourne Girls’ College (71) and Sydney’sAbbotsleigh School for Girls (60) after a dominant display at Carrara yesterday.
More than 20 schools from across the country are taking part in this year’s event, which is part of the three-week National Clubs Gymnastics Carnival on the Gold Coast.
AeroSchools is an aerobic gymnastics program where athletes perform in pairs, trios or groups and represent their school instead of their club or state.
In the first session of day one, the honours were evenly spread, with pairs from four different schools taking out top spot on the podium.
In the Level 3 Junior Pairs division, Lily Bock and Jema Gilchrist (Moreton Bay College) claimed gold with a score of 14.85, while fellow Queenslanders Madeline Spanevello and Emma Tanwan (Mt St Michael’s) were victorious in the Level 3 Intermediate Pairs with a score of 15.90.
Melbourne Girls’ College’s Charlotte Bourke and Evelyn Gammon won the Level 4 Intermediate Pair division (15.90), with Australian representative Ruby Conti and partner Alessia McCaig (Bendigo’s Girton Grammar School) winning the Level 4 Junior Pairs with a massive score of 16.65.
In the evening session, Abbotsleigh School for Girls and Melbourne Girls’ College finished with the most titles, with the former winning the Level 4 Senior Pair and Level 4 Senior Trio divisions and the latter victorious in the Level 4 Intermediate and Level 5 Senior Trio.
The remaining six titles were shared among Mt St Michael’s, Moreton Bay College, PLC sydney and Victoria’s Firbank Grammar School, Siena College and Star of the Sea College.
Day two will feature two sessions, with trampoline (Carrara, 9.30am) and Gymnastics for All (Broadbeach, 11am) athletes also set to compete for the first time today.
