Griffith has one hand on Sevens silverware

- ALEXANDRA BERNARD

GRIFFITH University will be chasing glory heading into the final tournament of the Aon Uni Sevens Series in two weeks’ time.

After taking out Round 4 at Bond University yesterday afternoon, Griffith assistant coach Setu Naseri is confident of the team’s chances to claim the overall premiership.

“We’ve put ourselves in a position to have a really good chance to clinch the title,” he said.

Breaking a three-way tie with the University of Queensland and Macquarie University, Griffith now sits at the top of the table.

Heading into the tournament off the back of their first gold medal at UQ in the third round, Naseri said the team was in a good headspace.

However, it wasn’t an easy run for Griffith, with a tough draw of four games on the first day.

Despite this, they proved their dominance and became the first team to win all four.

After an undefeated run to the final, a dominant Griffith defeated Sydney University 31-0 to secure back-to-back gold medals.

Moving into the next tournament, Naseri said the team had a lot to play for and would give it their best.

“We’ll go back to work this week and have two weeks of hard training to produce a good effort and hopefully a good result in Adelaide,” he said.

Griffith has been rapidly building a reputation as rugby sevens powerhouses, having now claimed a bronze, silver and two golds.

Bond meanwhile were competitive throughout the roundrobin phase before stumbling in the play-offs to finish eighth on home turf.

The fifth and final round will be held at the University of Adelaide on October 20-21.
