SET FOR GOLDEN DOGTOBER

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

IT’S ALL paws on deck this weekend as dozens of golden retrievers and their owners come together to celebrate Assistance Dogs Australia’s “Dogtober”.

Hoping to raise awareness and funds for ADA and their work training and placing assistance dogs across the country, Dogtober calls on people to hold their own doggie-themed meetups and activities.

Assistance Dogs Australia trains dogs to conduct dozens of specialised cues including opening fridges, retrieving dropped items and even unloading the washing machine.

The perfectly-named event caught the eye of Golden Retriever Meetup Gold Coast organiser Rhiannon Rudduck, who said she knew immediately she wanted to be involved.

“It was right after those 300 golden retrievers got together in Scotland, and I thought I’d love to have an event where we get as many goldens together as possible,” she said.

“It all just sort of snowballed from there, we’ve got vendors, dog ice-cream, treats, and it’s just about trying to get as many dogs together as possible.”

More than double the usual 40 golden retrievers are expected to attend the event, with each bringing along a donation for the organisation.
