Champs decided

GOLD Coast have dominated the Queensland Champion of Club Champion Fours State Finals at Club Helensvale.

Matt Lucas, Sam White, Mark Casey and Aron Sherriff (Helensvale) cruised in their section and then easily beat South Townsville in the final at the weekend.

Broadbeach’s Cassandra Millerick, Sue McKenzie, DeeAnne Robertson and Bolivia Millerick cleaned up the women’s event in similar fashion. After three big wins in sectional play, they defeated Kawana in the final.

Play was delayed during the final due to the weather. The games were reduced to 16 ends.

The pairs event started yesterday at Club Helensvale with Sherriff and myself in the men’s competitio­n while Katelyn Inch and Julie Keegan (Broadbeach) are in the women’s. Both teams lead their sections after two rounds.

The third and final round of sectional play is this morning with finals this afternoon.

The event will finish with the singles qualifying rounds tomorrow and finals on Thurs-

day morning. Inch will back up in the women’s singles while Paradise Point’s Eric Johannes will contest the men’s.

THE Queensland over-60s men’s team, featuring many Gold Coasters, claimed a silver in the national senior sides in South Australia. The women’s team finished fifth.

KEN Ashford, Dale McWhinney-Shillingto­n and Dean McWhinney (Beenleigh) teamed with McKenzie Park’s Jackie McWhinney-Shillingto­n to win the $35,000 Lightning Ridge Black Opal Classic.

They defeated a local team in the final while a composite team of Paul Staggard Sr (Musgrave Hill), Clinton Sheldon (McKenzie Park), Dennis Margan (Broadbeach) and Ralph Fair (ex-McKenzie Park) reached the semi-finals.
