Trump sacks Attorney-General, ready for Democrats ‘war’
A FIRED-UP Donald Trump has threatened a “warlike posture” if Democrats use their new powers to investigate him as he sacked his much-maligned Attorney-General Jeff Sessions.
The forced resignation, in a one-page letter to Mr Trump, came a day after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives to Democrats in midterm elections and is the first of several expected Cabinet and White House departures.
But the Republicans maintained their control of the Senate and the President labelled the results a “tremendous success” and an “incredible day” for his party.
Though Mr Sessions was an early and prominent campaign backer of Mr Trump, his undated departure letter lacked effusive praise for the President and made clear the resignation came “at your request”.
Mr Trump simply tweeted: “We thank Attorney-General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!”
The President had repeatedly criticised his top law official, launching blistering and personal attacks over the past 12 months.
The pair had been at odds ever since Mr Sessions stepped aside from the investigation into Russian meddling at the last US election.
His exit has potentially far-reaching implications for special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe given that the new acting Attorney-General, Matthew Whitaker, has questioned the inquiry’s scope.
Earlier in the day Mr Trump had said he was ready to work with Democrats after his foes took control of the House of Representatives.
But the President insisted he would adopt a “warlike posture” if Democrats use their new-won powers to investigate him.
“If that happens, then we’re going to do the same thing, and government comes to a halt,” Mr Trump said.
