Bluewave pitchers ready for gruelling period

SURFERS Paradise coach Matt Corbitt insists his side’s make-up match on Wednesday night will not hinder their preparations for a crucial twogame series against Ipswich.

Coming off their breakthrough win over Coomera on Sunday, the Bluewave lost 3-1 to Carina on Wednesday night despite a stellar performance on the mound by Brad Croft.

“Their starter Aaron Thompson pitched really well and we just couldn’t get anything going against him,” Corbitt said.

The midweek fixture means Surfers will have played five games in 10 days by the end of their home series against the Musketeers – tonight’s match is at Beenleigh – but Corbitt believes his pitching rotation are up for the challenge.

“It places a little bit of extra strain but nothing the guys aren’t prepared for,” he said.

“We’re really close to getting on a roll, the guys just have to really want it.”

The Cubs meanwhile are sailing in second place (5-3) ahead of an away series against Pine Hills.

Coach Phil Stockman confirmed centre fielder Shawon Dunston Jr will be available despite leaving the field midway through their Sunday loss.

“It’s obviously starting to get hot now and he is not used to the heat yet. He cramped up in the lower back pretty badly and couldn’t get out of it … he is fine now,” Stockman said.

American import Ben Runyon will start for Coomera tonight now that Australian Baseball League duties have taken over for their usual Friday night pitcher Josh Warner.
