Roheryn’s record dips

-

ROHERYN was backed as if unbeatable but couldn’t preserve his perfect race record with a controversial loss at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday.

Racing NSW stewards have adjourned an inquiry into jockey Josh Parr’s ride on boom Godolphin three-year-old Roheryn and to study betting records on the race.

It was learned that Parr’s manager, John Walter, had selected eventual winner Chess Star to his tipping service subscribers. There’s nothing wrong with that but perception is important and stewards need to be asking questions.

Parr told stewards he had not spoken to Walter on Saturday morning prior to the race meeting and the jockey had no issue in handing over his mobile phone for examination.

Also, when analysing Parr’s ride, could he have done much more on Roheryn?

Roheryn was coming back slightly in race distance and his lack of early tactical speed was exacerbated as Chess Star scooted along at a solid tempo.

Parr told stewards he was trying to keep Roheryn in touch with the field mid-race but the colt wasn’t “travelling” early. The jockey still remained confident Roheryn would reel in the leaders as he doubted the likes of Chess Star could maintain the pace.

Roheryn did sprint home his final 600m sectional in a stunning 32.35s – easily the fastest of the day – but he could only get to within two lengths of Chess Star. Put simply, Chess Star just didn’t stop.
