Cubs’ young talent time

YOUNG gun baseballers Patrick Day and Jack Waters are keeping the Coomera Cubs alive after stellar pitching efforts.

The team took a clean sweep over Carina Redsox in Round 7, prevailing 9-6 yesterday and 3-1 on Wednesday.

Coach Phil Stockman said 16-year-olds Day and Waters helped the Cubs get over the line.

“Their pitching was really good – they carried the team. I was very impressed with how they played,” he said.

“We felt really good and after Wednesday’s win we wanted to get the clean sweep.

“Overall they played really well. They had a quick start and scored early.”

While Stockman said his side’s energy wore off around the middle of the game, he was pleased with how they responded later on.

“The boys took the pedal off and slowed up a bit in the middle of the game. They could’ve scored more runs out there.

“The win felt really good – Carina’s a good team so it was good to get the sweep.

“It’s a good step and has given the boys confidence heading into next week.”

Now preparing for next weekend’s trip to Windsor, Stockman said the Cubs still had plenty to work on.

“We need to get stronger at the basic fundamentals of baseball and need to improve defensively,” he said.

Stockman said the Royals, who won five-straight titles before their run was ended by Surfers Paradise last season, would be no walkovers.

“It’s tough to play Windsor at home, but the boys have the right confidence,” he said.

Surfers yesterday bounced back from a 7-5 loss to Pine Hills on Wednesday, to beat the Lightning 8-7 in the 10th inning.
