Queens bowl way to victory

- CONNOR O’BRIEN @obrien_GCB

QUEENS’ ever-reliable bowling attack have helped the Kookaburra Cup powerhouse club survive a major scare against Surfers Paradise.

The Centaurs appeared on the ropes on Saturday after being bowled out inside 35 overs for 109, with Chris Swan (4-22) and Michael Waldren (3-26) doing the damage for the Demons.

“I think everyone just decided the next person is going to do it,” Queens captain Jack Winton said of their innings.

“There was a lot of work to be done. I wasn’t very happy with our batting performance and once again we put pressure on the bowlers to try to get us out of a hole.”

But as they have done so often, their bowlers indeed got the job done, restricting Surfers to 9-81. Winton took 2-4 off eight overs, his brother Harry claimed 3-11 while Jacob Schouten did his bit with 2-18.

“It was probably one of the best bowling performances I have seen us put together in a couple of years,” Winton said.

“The boys just hit a line and length, and limited the bad balls.”

Queens have now won three straight to get on a roll after going winless through October.

Over at Hession Oval, Helensvale Pacific Pines (4-220) opened their season account against Runaway Bay (120) on the back of a supreme 101 from wicketkeeper-batsman Kaleb Day. The 21-year-old hailed the milestone “a relieving moment” having previously shown promising signs without posting a major score.

“It still hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Day said.

“I needed that big score because there has always been a bit of self-doubt about whether or not I could go on with the starts I’ve been making over the years, so getting to 100 was such a relieving moment for me.”

Elsewhere:

Nic Peterson continued his stellar season to drive Southport Labrador (6-176) to

victory over Alberton Ormeau (9-175) with four overs to spare. Peterson scored 85 at the top of the Tigers order to take his Kookaburra Cup season tally to 354 runs at an average of 70.8.

● Déjà vu struck for Coomera Hope Island as Broadbeach Robina pair Tom Scriven (4-40 and 26 not out) and Felix Organ (73 not out) starred in an eight-wicket win for the Cats.

Coomera’s innings derailed with a collapse of 8-23, seven days after losing 9-39 against Runaway Bay.
