BOND RUE WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN IN MAIDEN SEVENS SERIES

- CONNOR O’BRIEN connor.obrien@news.com.au

BOND University clinched their second tournament win of the four-part Queensland Premier Rugby Sevens series but Corbin Kiernan believes so much more was possible.

The Bullsharks got off to a shaky start in the season finale on Saturday at Coorparoo, losing 19-17 to the NT Mosquitoes.

But that defeat sparked them into action as they scraped through to the toptier semi-finals where they trumped Iconz and then backed it up against University of Queensland in the decider.

UQ had been the dominant outfit until then, sailing through the round stage with 17 tries and a plus-86 differential from three games.

However, they proved no match for Bond in the final as the Gold Coast squad took victory 19-0.

“After losing the first game we just went out there like we have got nothing to lose,” said Kiernan, who was named in the series dream team alongside

teammate Hayden Sargeant.

“It was like an all or nothing type of situation so I think it was good for us. We needed that first loss to get us back winning.”

Their success propelled them to second in the seasonending standings, with Sunnybank claiming the inaugural overall title.

It backed up their tournament win in Round 2, though they could manage only ninth and seventh placings in the other two events.

“I guess we’re either on or we’re off,” Kiernan said.

“It kind of sucks, I think if we finished even in the middle of the pack in the other tournaments that we didn’t win we would have won the series.

“With the team we had, we should have won every tournament but I guess that’s the good thing about sevens, you just can’t pick it on the day.”

Kiernan put his own form down to improved fitness.

The 25-year-old is expected to be among the Bond players representing Queensland at the National Men’s Sevens Championships at Ballymore Stadium on December 6-9.
