Man riding bicycle faster than cars found with handguns

-

A GOLD Coast man who drew police attention by riding a $10,000 bicycle faster than cars on the road “in the grips of a meth addiction” was later caught with a policeissue handgun.

Ross Stuart McCallum pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to drug, weapons and obstructing police charges.

The court was told police saw McCallum riding the electric bicycle at more than 80kmh on Reedy Creek Rd at Burleigh Heads in August.

He fled from police when they tried to pull him over but officers later caught up to him when he lost control of the bike down an embankment.

Officers found a fake driver’s licence on him and a bag containing 2g of crystal methamphetamine.

The next day, police raided McCallum’s Burleigh Heads unit where they found more meth, seven MDMA pills, an air pellet pistol and a loaded .40mm handgun.

The court was told McCallum explained he bought the gun for $2500 from a friend. Defence lawyer Lawyer Jodi Allen told the court the weapon was for protection after he had received threats.

Ms Allen said McCallum was listening to music on headphones and panicked when police tried to pull him over. She said McCallum attended a drug rehabilitation centre in the US and drug programs after his arrest.

Magistrate Mark Howden fined McCallum $5000. No conviction was recorded.
