Bold Burleigh vision

Club plans pool with surf view

ONE of the Gold Coast’s biggest surf clubs will be redeveloped to include a rooftop pool overlooking an iconic beach.

An expanded restaurant, kiosk and pool facilities will be at the centre of the newlook Burleigh Heads-Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club under a bold plan to future-proof it against the city’s growing population.

The club filed plans with the Gold Coast City Council this week for the works, which are expected to begin in May following the end of the patrol season and will transform the building’s northern side.

Club president Michael Boyce said it would be the “ultimate upgrade”.

“We can do the ultimate upgrade here and it will mean we will not have to come back and do smaller upgrades every few years,” he said.

“The club will revamp the kiosk and the restaurant area as well as have better facilities through which we can help the public and the community.

“We decided on the pool after finding out that many young kids come to do Nippers and cannot swim so this is a place where they can get assistance and then go on to join the program.”

The building has undergone several changes in the past 11 years, during which it gained extra gaming machines. The older building was renovated in 2010 and a third story was added in 2013.

The surf club, founded in 1923, has more than 1200 members while its supporters club has 8000.

The plans have been drawn up over the past 18 months and will go before the council’s planning committee for approval early next year.

A basement storage area will be created as well as improved disability access for the building.

Area councillor Pauline Young said she was excited about the upgrade.

“Being one of the Gold Coast’s iconic beaches, this

will let the club provide facilities which will be able to support the growth of the community and that is a great thing,” she said.

“As a surf club they have made a huge contribution to the community and the pool will make sure the children and adults who want to get involved are strong simmers before going into the ocean.”
