Coast duo’s Kookas call-up
THE Gold and Tweed coasts will be strongly represented in men’s hockey in 2019 with Corey Weyer and Dylan Wotherspoon named in the national senior men’s squad.
The 27-member Kookaburras will compete in the FIH Pro League from January to June next year, followed by the Oceania Cup which is the qualification event Tokyo Olympics.
The selection panel considered several priorities for selecting the squad, with a longterm view to medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics along with achieving performance benchmarks in 2019.
The panel also looked to reward performances in the daily training environment and national and international for the matches throughout 2018.
“Our 2019 squad selection is formed with a longer view to what our squad needs to look like in 2020,” Kookaburras coach Colin Batch said.
Labrador Hockey Club products Weyer and Wotherspoon are part of the Australian team flying to India tomorrow for the 2018 World Cup where they will be chasing a third consecutive title.
