Coast duo’s Kookas call-up

THE Gold and Tweed coasts will be strongly represente­d in men’s hockey in 2019 with Corey Weyer and Dylan Wotherspoo­n named in the national senior men’s squad.

The 27-member Kookaburra­s will compete in the FIH Pro League from January to June next year, followed by the Oceania Cup which is the qualificat­ion event Tokyo Olympics.

The selection panel considered several priorities for selecting the squad, with a longterm view to medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics along with achieving performanc­e benchmarks in 2019.

The panel also looked to reward performanc­es in the daily training environmen­t and national and internatio­nal for the matches throughout 2018.

“Our 2019 squad selection is formed with a longer view to what our squad needs to look like in 2020,” Kookaburra­s coach Colin Batch said.

Labrador Hockey Club products Weyer and Wotherspoo­n are part of the Australian team flying to India tomorrow for the 2018 World Cup where they will be chasing a third consecutiv­e title.
