COAST FISHING

-

The hot weather has certainly stirred up some quality fish, including mangrove jacks

HI EVERYONE, hope you’ve all had a great week. It was nice to see a bit of a cooler wind change after an extra hot weekend on the Gold Coast.

The hot weather has certainly stirred up some quality fish, let’s have a look at some options to target.

Coomera Bait and Tackle customers have reported plenty of Mangrove Jack action over the past week with some quality specimens being landed in the Coomera River, Paradise Point Canals, Sovereign Islands and the Nerang River. Live bait like Mullet, Pike, Herring, Silver Biddies, Garfish and Whiting have been working well.

Trolling hard body lures along rock walls and beside pontoons will let you cover a large area and a variety of water depths until you can find a good spot to fish.

There have been lots of anglers throwing soft plastics and surface lures with mixed success. My favourite plastics are the Zman 4” and 3” Minnowz rigged on HD TT Headlockz jig heads.

You have to be on the ball the whole time you are fishing, when a Jack bites, it hits like a freight train and will try to brick you straight back into the snag you found it in.

Surf fishing has been fairly productive with some nice Dart, Whiting, Bream and Tarwhine being caught in the gutters from Narrow Neck north to the Sand Pumping jetty. Beach worms and pipis are great bait and can be caught and collected from the beach where you are fishing.

Once the SE winds ease up it will be worth a go early morning and late afternoon.

Coomera Houseboat Holiday customers have scored a nice feed of Flathead, Whiting and the odd Mud Crab during the week. Some good spots to fish have been Wave Break Island, The Never Fails, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, Green and Gold Bank, Kalinga Bank, Canaipa Passage, sandbanks north of Cabbage Tree Point and Logan River.

Some good land-based spots for Whiting are Paradise Point, Runaway Bay and Labrador Foreshore, Marine Stadium, Budds Beach, Currumbin Creek and Tallebudgera Creek. Worms are the best bait for Whiting while Yabbies, Prawns, White Pilchards and Mullet Fillet has been working on the Flathead.

Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters has reported great Mangrove Jack action up the Nerang River. He has also been scoring a nice mixed bag of Whiting, Flathead, Tuskfish and Flounder from around the Runaway Bay area.

Brad has been chasing the bait schools up the further reaches of the Tweed River with some good success on Flathead and Jewfish.

Brad has also scored a few nice Whiting throwing surface lures in the shallows.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any great catches or photos you would like to share, please email us and let us know how you went.

At the time of writing my report the forecast looks like we will see strong south-easterly winds today.

Saturday and Sunday we will see the SE wind ease to moderate, so Sunday looks like the best day to go fishing. I always recommend you have the latest weather report before you hit the water.

If you have any catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au.

Good luck with the fishing.
