Tomic bundled out in first round

-

GOLD Coaster Bernard Tomic’s return to the Australian Open has been short, losing a firstround clash with 2018 finalist, Marin Cilic.

The sixth-seeded Cilic defeated the rejuvenated Tomic (pictured) 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in two hours and three minutes last night.

Tomic, who failed to qualify for last year’s event, struggled with the big-serving Croatian’s power game on his return to his home slam, conceding 24 aces and 56 winners on Margaret Court Arena.

Fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios is struggling to “lay it all on the line” ahead of starting his sixth Australian Open campaign with a blockbuster clash against big-serving Milos Raonic tonight.

While feeling “in a good spot” after seeking professional help to conquer his mental demons, the mercurial talent is finding it tough to fully commit 100 per cent to the rigours of life on tour.

Kyrgios offered short shrift to Mark Philippoussis’ weekend claims that the dual grand slam quarter-finalist was “terrified to show that he’s trying” and has a fear of failure.

“Cheers, Mark,” he said.
