SHARK ALERT IN QPL

- with Brett Wilkie

THE South Tweed Sharks have started the best of local clubs in the Queensland Premier League.

Only three teams remain undefeated after the seasonopening double-header with Victoria Point Magpies, the Sharks and Kawana Thunder enjoying this success.

Boasting a new-look lineup, the Sharks cruised to a comfortable win over Belmont Blaze on Saturday before sneaking home by three shots on Sunday against the Greenslopes Geckos.

Gary Pearson’s rink of Cohen Litfin, Bill Cornehls and Peter Taylor were the standouts for the Sharks, winning both games with a margin of 24. They were the only rink to win in the club’s Round 2 victory.

Kawana got the better of defending champions Helensvale Hawks by two shots in their grand final rematch.

The Hawks bounced back on Sunday with a big win over Booval Swifts to elevate them into fourth on the ladder.

The 2017 champions Broadbeach Bulls and Tweed Heads Ospreys had the same fate, losing their first rounds to Pine Rivers Pirates and Hamilton Power respectively.

They were back in the winners circle in Round 2 with the Bulls’ seven-shot victors over state pennant runners-up Enoggera Eagles while the Ospreys cruised to a ten-shot victory over the Pirates.

This weekend sees the first of our local derbies with the Ospreys hosting the Hawks.

Both teams will be down a player with Chloe Stewart (Ospreys) and Lynsey Clarke (Hawks) heading to New Zealand this week to contest the Burnside Pairs tournament in Christchurch.

The Bulls are home to Hamilton Power and the Sharks have their first home game against the Thunder.

The Thunder will travel down early on Saturday and play their Round 5 game against Tweed Heads in the morning before their South Tweed clash that afternoon.

SUMMER Nines begin this weekend with 17 of 23 Gold Coast Tweed clubs playing.

IT is with much sadness that I advise of the passing of Bowls Gold Coast Tweed District Patron Max Morris on January 9.

Max was a true gentleman and an integral part of the district for the past 25 years. He was well known and liked by all.

A service to celebrate his life will be held tomorrow at 1.30pm (Qld time) at the Melaleuca Station Chapel, Tweed Valley Way, Chinderah.
