HAVE YOU SEEN MY COW?

- ANDREW POTTS

WHERE’S the beef?

That’s the question police are asking after brazen wranglers rustled one of the iconic fibreglass cows from outside Cav’s Steakhouse at the weekend.

The cow, known as Dewey, was snatched from outside the famous Labrador eatery in a moment of udder madness as thieves used tools to shear off the bolts holding the 80kg cow in place.

Police say it was last seen late on Saturday night being carried down Frank Street by two men. The thieves remain at large and police investigations continue, although there are no plans for a “steak out’’.

Cav’s owner Richard Cavill has offered a reward for the safe return of Dewey.

“If you have it, please bring it back and we will accept it, no questions asked,” he said.

“My wife is offering a reward for any information that will lead to its return.”

Mr Cavill said he noticed the fibreglass cow was gone yesterday morning before opening.

“I went out to ‘water’ them and realised it had gone walkabout.”

The theft was reported yesterday morning.

A police spokeswoman told the Bulletin investigations were continuing.

It is not the first time one of the cows has been taken from the restaurant.

Dewey’s mate Huey was taken late one night in December, but was found the next morning in a nearby street.

It was believed the cow had been taken by a group of people who had used the restaurant’s carpark to hold a pre-Christmas party.

The three cows, named Huey, Dewey and Louie after Donald Duck’s nephews, have been a fixture outside Cav’s since it opened in 1984.

The solid steers became a Labrador landmark, with tourists often snapping photographs with them.

They are expected to stay on the block even when the Frank St steakhouse is demolished later this year to make way for a 12-storey midrise tower project which will incorporate a new restaurant.

Known as Cav’s Emporium, it will be part of a retail and commercial area that will include a café, medical centre, chemist and pathology group.

The cows are expected to be put into storage during construction and brought out once the tower is completed.
