FINALISTS IN PEOPLE’S CHOICE TEAM OF THE YEAR
Palm Beach Currumbin State High School open boy’s rugby league team: Following their success in the state competition, the boys from PBC went on to secure the national schoolboys competition title in 2018. This was PBC’s latest silverware in the competition following success in past years with the likes of Titans captain Ryan James coming through the ranks. Following their victory, a number of players have gone on to secure NRL contracts.
Southport Sharks NEAFL premiership team:
The Sharks were one of the Gold Coast’s great grassroots stories of 2018, completing a remarkable transformation from a ninth place finish in the 2017 NEAFL season to dominant premiers of the semi-national competition in 2018. This was the club’s first NEAFL flag and they achieved it in front of a vocal home crowd of 3000.
Gold Coast Cougars Little League Baseball team:
This young side of up-andcoming baseballers provided another great Gold Coast sporting story. They were the first Gold Coast side to claim the Australian Little League championship and in doing so they also booked their place at the World Little League titles in America, representing Australia. The squad was also named Queensland Junior Team of the Year at the Queensland Sport Awards for their massive achievements in 2018.
Palm Beach Currumbin Lions QAFL team:
The Lions went back-to-back in 2018, taking out their second consecutive QAFL title in a local derby against the Broadbeach Cats. It was another strong season for the Lions, with huge support from their local community. The club boasts strong family ties, with a number of siblings playing together, as well as family ties in club management and staff, making it even more special and exciting for all those involved.
