IT IS fair to say that the conference system does not have many fans outside of league headquarters.
As we enter the preliminary finals, the first-placed team of each conference is playing the second-placed team from the other. It makes for some lopsided punting. Carlton – who won four games for the season and finished with
a percentage under 100 – “earned’’ the right to host by finishing first in Conference B. They play Fremantle, who lost just one game and finished with a percentage of 141.
The fact the Dockers got seriously jilted and have to travel to Melbourne should not make too much difference. The scheduling is unfair, but the class of the Dockers will shine through. Adelaide are the absolute class of the competition and have thrashed some high-calibre opponents. What they face in their preliminary final will not be high calibre. Geelong won three games and have the worst percentage in the competition, a paltry 65.5.
