ROUND 1 can be many things in the AFL. It is rarely a measure of what is to come for the rest of the season.

We have seen some big upsets in the opening round in recent

seasons and it might be the week to have some speculative bets on a couple of outsiders. The Brisbane Lions ($2.40) are the team mooted as most likely to make the charge up the ladder, but have drawn reigning premiers West Coast ($1.55) for their opener at the Gabba. This is the longest road trip in football and often a premiership team can start a little slower because they started their preseason several weeks later. The Lions look the best outsiders of the weekend. St Kilda ($1.26) have shown very little reason for excitement

and while their Round 1 opponents Gold Coast Suns ($3.75) have shown even less, the discrepancy in price seems exorbitant.

Hawthorn ($3.15) are also worth a wager at big odds. This was a top-four team after the homeand-away season last year and while the Crows ($1.35) are another expected to rise again, there is little reason they should be as short as they are.

As a multi, the three pay more than 30-1 and could be worth a throw at the stumps.
