Counsellors, not chaplains, needed for unruly children
AS per Laura Nelson’s article (GCB, 13/3), I would like to support a call for funds to hire counsellors to help schools deal with students whose unacceptable behaviour can make a school an unhappy, even dangerous place for everyone.
My daughter’s teacher tells me that what is required are social workers trained at university level in ways to deal with problems specific to families of school children behaving badly. Many chaplains no doubt do a good job buy why should our children be provided with anything less than trained professionals?
Chaplains are by definition connected to churches.
I think all can agree that with what we know about the church these days, a person of faith is not necessarily a good person to look after children, especially those with problems.
Adults with emotional issues go to trained counsellors, not chaplains. Why should children be made to accept anything less? BRENDA HARRISON, PALM BEACH
