RE: Ian Timmins’ comment, I too had first-hand experience of Gold Coast City Council and its misleading advice.

I rang GCCC after the heavy rains last week to advise that the sewage manhole was spurting out waste water. I was told by the operator that I would have to ring a plumber and get them to come out. I was a little taken aback by this and explained this was not my sewage line but GCCC’s.

Again I was told I was not listening, I had to ring a plumber, and all plumbers know that if it’s a GCCC issue, they would then in turn charge GCCC accordingly. I was not happy.

I rang my local councillor’s office and spoke with the secretary who agreed that it was not my responsibility to call a plumber. She advised me that she would contact council.

A council plumber came out, put the camera down the line, went and checked further up the line only to find out that the pumping station had stopped working and was creating a back-up.

I couldn’t thank the council plumber enough – very polite, and came back and advised us of the problem – and also my local councillor’s office for following up on this issue

My message to GCCC is train your staff better. The advice I was given was totally incorrect KJB, SOUTHPORT

I AGREE with Big Mal who was critical of sports stars who commit crime.

People should realise children admire sports stars and if they commit a crime then some children will think it is OK to commit a crime if they become a sports star. J GRAY, TWEED HEADS

I REFER to Lea Smouha’s letter in Saturday’s GCB.

I will make an assumption that Ms Smouha is of the Green/Left persuasion and remind her of the lost opportunities, courtesy of the Greens/Labor, to build dams in order to conserve precious water.

She makes the statement that “water is life and without water there is no life”, and on this I must agree with her but it defies the tenet of her letter.

Conserve water by building dams and not let it run out to sea or create devastating floods, as we have seen so recently in North Queensland.

In spite of the Green rhetoric, humanity must eat and therefore water is required to facilitate this whether you are vegan or carnivore! LEN THOMSON, PARKWOOD

MY suggestion to improve our image for free as follows:

Why don’t you foreigners with your gratuitous opinions about Oz, just bloody well rack off and tidy your own backyards? DAVID HALL, COOMBABAH

AS Australians awoke yesterday morning we heard the LNP in NSW will in all probability be able to form a bastardised version of government.

Instead of learning from such madness we will do a repeat federally.

If only Australians were to take a short while from their beloved sport and other distractions to vote in a government that has their interest at heart, then the country would be a better place. D.J. FRASER, CURRUMBIN

WHILE sacked copper refinery workers are still in many cases struggling to survive, how dare this Clive Palmer spend a fortune on several properties on the Gold Coast. (GCB, Mar 18).

He is the lowest of the low. ‘Poor little rich man’ suits him perfectly! KEN JOHNSTON, ROCHEDALE SOUTH

THE New South Wales election is over, the people have spoken and they spoke loudly which we all must pay attention to.

There was no form swing against the government, there were swings against those elected members who were not doing their jobs, both LNP, ALP, National and Green.

The Greens who made a big play against the Tweed Hospital and the local member who was totally behind the project were defeated and told by the people to go away.

One Nation, who every Green and ALP supporter has said are evil, now has a say in NSW with one seat if not two.

Our council should pay attention to these results. If you are just sitting back and doing nothing or just supporting one side of the opinion of people then you may not be with us soon.

I say this clearly as a warning for certain councillors, especially the councillor in Nerang who has shown his intention to only focus on his support of Greens.

The fact is that on the Gold Coast, the results just over the border are an indication on how we as voters feel and those who wish to push their individual beliefs may find that they are not being listened to and they need to listen to what the people who they do not have coffee with are the people who they should be listening to. RON NIGHTINGALE, BIGGERA WATERS

I READ with interest Susie O’Brien’s column in Saturday’s Bulletin “Beers of now all froth and bubble”.

Having been a career drinker I too have fallen under the spell of Dan Murphy’s, BWS et al and the plethora of new offerings from boutique breweries far and wide.

Neither have I a man bun or meticulously scaped facial hair but I have come to realisation that, like many others, I have become a beer snob. Quirky pale ales, IPAs, XPAs and pilseners have replaced the “meat and three veg” vintages of my past such as VB, Tooheys New and Carlton Draught.

I am also guilty of thinking nothing these days paying the same amount for a four-pack of cans as I would for a six-pack.

What stupidity! Well no more. It’s VB for me. KEN JARVIS, NERANG
