Robinson’s up for the challenge
THE departure of one NRL player has opened the door for another former top grader at Pizzey Park.
News of Morgan Boyle’s sudden mid-season switch from Gold Coast to Manly broke yesterday. The talented 22-year-old had played for Burleigh in the first two weeks of the Intrust Super Cup but was a late omission for their Round 3 showdown with Tweed.
He was replaced on the bench by former Titans second-rower Matt Robinson, who scored a try as Burleigh surged late to run away with a 32-4 victory.
Robinson, 29, had been forced to bide his time in the Bears’ Rugby League Gold Coast A-grade side, such is the club’s forwards depth, but he made an impact upon being called up to face his former ISC team.
“He just gave us that bit of leg speed and energy right when everyone was sort of peaking out with their effort and then Robbo comes on and just scores a try through effort and energy,” Burleigh coach Jimmy Lenihan said.
“He was really good.” Robinson was pleased to be in the ISC 17 but said he had no problem waiting his turn for an opportunity, despite having played 38 NRL matches.
“There’s a lot of young guys with a lot of talent so I’m just happy to help out anyone I can and share my knowledge and experience,” he said.
“Obviously they have got a great team this year and a lot of depth so it is pretty exciting to be back playing up here.
“The way we defended was pretty outstanding. To keep Tweed to four points after the first two games that they have had is really impressive.”
Burleigh’s pack is still to be bolstered by Blake Leary, once he returns from a stint in France.
