SWEET PLUMB

JOCKEY’S GIFT BEFORE EXIT

- TOM BOSWELL

RYAN Plumb’s final race before an international spell has delivered his third Listed win and Tyzone’s first.

Plumb shook off a terrible day at Aquis Park on Saturday to pull off a mighty win with the Toby Edmondstrained Tyzone in the $125,000 Listed Goldmarket (1200m).

One of Gold Coast’s leading jockeys departed for Hong Kong with partner Jane and their children yesterday, where they will spend a few days before a couple of weeks with family in Ireland.

“I had a terrible day up until that last race,” Plumb said. “Everything went really bad. The horses all went ordinary early in the day but luckily it turned around.”

Plumb settled midfield after jumping well and got the cover he desired before shifting six-wide coming into the straight, where Tyzone outgunned his rivals.

“I was really happy with where I was in the run,” Plumb said. “My biggest worry before the race was that I wouldn’t get into a spot with cover. I got into a perfect position straight away, ended up finding the fence and then the back of (Michael Costa’s) Manaya.

“I knew she would take me a long way. She shifted out quite a fair bit in the straight but I just waited until we straightened up and got to the outside. He went down great and had a great turn of foot.”

It was the first listed win for Tyzone, who had come close before and was beaten by a hair in last year’s Eye Liner at Ipswich. Edmonds gave Tyzone a two-month spell to freshen him up to ensure he was peaking for Saturday’s race at the Gold Coast.

“It was a very good win,” Edmonds said.

“He has been going well but I thought he might have had a bit too much weight on him to win. But credit to the horse he is such a competitor. He is improving each preparation, which is a good sign.

“Good win by Tyzone: it was a good win. A very good win. I was in Brisbane. He was just beaten in the Eye Liner last year and there have been another couple of runs where he was a bit flat and didn’t perform as well as he could have.

“But we added the blinkers this time and the last two wins have been in blinkers, it’s really switched him on.”

Edmonds said the stable was considering sending Tyzone to the Weetwood at Ipswich but the possibility of being heaped with more weight again had him contemplating sending the horse to Sydney.
