- with Brett Wilkie

HELENSVALE Hawks have won back-to-back Premier League Queensland titles after demolishing Pine Rivers Pirates in the grand final at Club Helensvale.

Both sides were jostling early with the Hawks holding a slight lead a third of the way through the match.

Aron Sherriff’s rink of Kelsey Cottrell, Michael Turner and Darren Christie then put the foot down and opened up a handy lead.

The other two Hawks rinks followed suit with all three dominating the second half of the game.

The Pirates conceded with 11 ends to play and the Hawks won by a massive 38 shots to claim their ninth title since the event began in 2000.

Sherriff defeated John Fleming 28-9 while Georgia White, Rohan Wilson, Anthony Kiepe and Andrew Howie defeated Steven Tong 25-13; Lynsey Clarke, Jayden Christie, Matthew Lucas and I defeated Robbie Wild 21-14.

Helensvale advanced to the final after defeating Tweed Heads Ospreys and Minor Premiers Pine Rivers.

Kawana won the suddendeath final against Booval and were then defeated by Tweed Heads.

Pine Rivers beat Tweed in the preliminary final by 15 to advance to the grand final.

The Hawks dedicated their win to Sooty Rice who is not well. Sooty is the father of Nathan Rice, who was at his bedside in Tasmania over the weekend.

In reserve grade, Tweed Heads had a comfortable win over Enoggera Eagles to win their first title in either grade.

MOTHER and son duo Jackie McWhinney (McKenzie Park) and Dale McWhinney-Shillington (Beenleigh) have claimed the Gold Coast Tweed District Mixed Pairs, defeating Vicki Day and Phil Brandon in the final.

They advance to the Zone 1 play-off against Gateway District for the chance to progress to the state finals.
