Hospital to look at delay: Minister
THE Queensland Health Minister has been in contact with a terminally ill cancer patient after the Bulletin published her complaints about her alleged treatment at a Gold Coast hospital.
The Bulletin yesterday revealed 60-year-old Gold Coast woman Robin O’Brien claimed she had waited hours for treatment after presenting at Robina Hospital.
The suggestion of inadequate medical treatment was refuted by the hospital on Monday.
Mrs O’Brien’s husband of 37 years Keith had since complained to the hospital over the matter.
In a statement yesterday Minister Steven Miles confirmed he had contacted the Bonogin couple.
“I’ve spoken to Mrs O’Brien and assured her a patient liaison officer will follow up with Mr and Mrs O’Brien to make sure all their concerns are addressed,” he said. “I’ve also asked Gold Coast HHS to investigate the delay.”
Mrs O’Brien said she was pleased to have received the call from the Minister.
“He called at 8.30am and wanted to apologise for the situation,” Mrs O’Brien said.
Mr O’Brien said his wife had since seen a private doctor who had been able to diagnose the issue behind the swelling and pain.
“I still feel pissed off and let down,” Mr O’Brien said. “But I appreciate the people who have reached out.”
Late yesterday Queensland Health released a public service announcement over the current unprecedented and unseasonal demand being experienced by southeast Queensland hospital emergency departments. The state government released up to $3 million in a bid to deal with the situation and provide extra capacity to help relieve pressure.
