MERRIMAC SHOOTING FOR TOP OF THE PILE

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

MERRIMAC High players have the chance to jag a surprise berth in the Gold Coast District Rugby Super Schools Cup final if they can land a big win over Helensvale this afternoon.

Marymount College are already assured of a place in next week’s Cup final having sailed through the opening four rounds undefeated.

Helensvale currently hold second but that could change if third-placed Merrimac score a bonus-point win at the Hogs.

“They’re very excited,” Merrimac coach Jack Moon said of his squad.

“They have worked hard to this point so hopefully we can get over the line against Helensvale and we can show everyone how talented the boys are.”

Asked if they would adopt an attacking game plan to vie for a bonus point, Moon responded simply: “If we work hard and defend well, then we’re in with a chance.”

Ormeau Woods are also an outside chance of jumping into second place but can only do so by smashing Miami High and having other results fall their way.
