FORGET THE EASTER BUNNY, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BILBY

- RISA UTAMA

A GOLD Coast theme park spokesman has put out the call to purchase Easter bilbies not bunnies this April to protect the endangered Australian marsupial.

Director of Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation and chairman of the Save the Bilby Fund, Al Mucci said it was time to “boycott the Easter bunny” in favour of national icon the bilby.

Pink Lady bilby chocolates are sold at Target, Myer and David Jones in the lead up to Easter, while Australian Bush Friends chocolates are available all year around. Both can be identified by a green swing tag.

“The bilby is an iconic Australian animal so if you’re a proud Aussie you should be buying bilbies not bunnies,” he said. “This Easter I urge everybody to buy Pink Lady which donates 30 cents per chocolate to the Save the Bilby Fund, totalling $50,000 per year.

“This Easter we’ll release 20-plus bilbies to Currawinya National Park where they’ll be protected by a predator-proof fence.

“There are only 400 bilbies left in Western Queensland who are being hunted by 20 million feral cats. They need our support or they’ll go extinct.”
