GOLDEN KEYS

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

FORMER Gold Coast Bulletin editor in chief Bob Gordon has been presented with the Keys to the City.

Mr Gordon, who led this newspaper from 1997 to 2009, received the ‘keys’ from Mayor Tom Tate at a ceremony at Metricon Stadium yesterday ahead of the Gold Coast Suns versus Freemantle Dockers AFL clash.

Cr Tate took a lighthearted dig at the 77-year-old, saying “how the hell did you get it, mate, you can’t surf, you can’t swim, you can’t run.” Former recipients have included surfing champion Joel Parkinson, Olympic champions Sally Pearson and Grant Hackett, Mick Doohan, Dr David Fleay and John Witheriff.

Cr Tate said Mr Gordon was an “incredible recipient” whose nomination had been accepted unanimously.

Mr Gordon has been a strong advocate for the city since the 1990s and successfully led the bid to secure the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
