Tourist’s grim souvenir grab

AN American tourist was caught trying to steal metal from the railway tracks at Auschwitz.

The 37-year-old admitted the attempted theft to police and was released from custody until his trial, a police spokeswoman said. He was detained after other visitors at the Nazi concentration camp noticed his behaviour and alerted staff.

Historians believe that Germany’s Nazi regime murdered between 1.1 million and 1.5 million people at the AuschwitzBirkenau camp during World War II. Most of the victims were Jews.
